5 Steps to Preparing for an Electric Vehicle Home Charger

2021 Chevy Bolt EV with car owners

With increasing gas prices, we understand how enticing an electric vehicle (EV) can be for your Huntington commute. The environmental and maintenance benefits are also great reasons to invest. If you’re considering purchasing one or already have it on the way, it’s time to have everything ready when it arrives at your home.

Many of our recent EV customers have asked us about how to prepare their Smithtown homes for an EV, and we’re here to help. There are 5 simple steps to help you prepare so that when your vehicle arrives, you’re ready to go. Prepare your home for your electric vehicle with Atlantic Chevrolet today!

1. Decide on a Charging Type/Charging Level

First, you want to do your research on the different types of EV chargers available. In general, you’ll find that most electric vehicle home chargers are put into two categories: Level 1 or Level 2. A simple breakdown is below:

  • Level 1 EV charging typically takes multiple days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging typically takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. With only 20-30 minutes of charging, you can get between 60-200 miles of driving. For this reason, most people intermix daytime “top-off” charging with overnight charging.

2. Prepare Your Garage

Next, you’ll want to clean your Medford garage and create space for your new charger. Organize your garage so the crew can install the charger easily and quickly.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Consumption

Now it’s time to determine the amperage on your power panel. The power panel distributes electricity throughout your entire house. If you have a newer home, you’ll probably have a 100 Amp power panel, but double check by checking your main circuit breaker. Next, you’ll want to check your electricity bill and see how much electricity you use on a consistent basis. This will help you avoid overloading your panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

Hiring an electrician will give you specific information about your power consumption and the implications of adding an EV charger to your home. It will also give you a chance to ask more specific questions you may have about your power consumption. If you find that your power panel won’t be able to take on an EV charger, the electrician can install a 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel.

5. Purchase Your EV Charger & Have it Installed

It’s time to purchase your new EV charger! Make sure to have an electrician install it properly and get ready to enjoy your new electric vehicle.
